Rare Grasshoppers to Be Protected During Paks II Construction

back to contents

The general environmental license for the construction of new reactor units at Paks with Russia’s input was approved last April by the Hungarian authorities. The new license application was filed in pursuance of the general environmental license. According to the website, the site allocated for the new reactor units does not have high environmental value, but the environmental license requires that much attention be paid during the construction to the protection of rare species. If needed, the regulator might decide to temporarily remove such species. The area around the Paks II construction site is inhabited by several protected species, including the feather grass, white stonecrop, snouted grasshopper, short-horned grasshopper (Omocestus petraeus), and European green lizard. If required, these species will be removed to another habitat with natural borders and returned after the construction is completed.
