New Reactors for Hungary’s Future
Pouring first concrete for Paks II might take place later this year. Hungary’s top officials are convinced that the country is in vital need of new nuclear capacity. As the on-site construction works are gaining momentum, the number of local contractors involved in the project will grow.
Turnkey Nuclear Project
The first quarter of 2024 saw a number of key construction operations completed at the site of Bangladesh’s first nuclear power plant. Its Unit 1 is expected to go critical later this year.
El Dabaa in Focus of Attention
In early March, the work began on the construction site to install the first tier of the inner containment for El Dabaa Unit 1. It is a critical structure for ensuring safety of a power unit. In general, the El Dabaa construction project is of great interest to the Egyptian public and is in the focus of attention of the top officials from the Egyptian government.
Safe Casks
The first dry cask was shipped to the Akkuyu NPP in mid-­February. These unrivaled containers for spent nuclear fuel are manufactured and transported to the construction site by Rosatom Group companies. Along with the cask, Rosatom engineers developed a set of maintenance equipment, which is not inferior to the cask in terms of production complexity.
Coming Up Short Without Rosatom
The main trend gaining momentum in the nuclear fuel market is the intention to increase output on the back of political fragmentation of the global economic landscape. This trend is manifested both in natural uranium mining and uranium enrichment. However, the intended increase in uranium output is halting and dragging due to shortages. Against this background, Rosatom is increasing uranium production and taking a strong position in supplying nuclear fuel products.
Light Steps of Composite Materials
Production of composites is one of Rosatom’s most interesting new businesses. These materials are used, among other things, in advanced vehicles, clean energy generation, cost-effective construction solutions, and high-performance sports.
Nuclear Technology for Healthy Living
In February, Rosatom took part in the Future Technologies Forum to present its latest developments in medicine, including 3D-printed organ samples, radiopharmaceuticals, and quantum algorithms for medical applications. Members of the BRICS Working Group on Nuclear Medicine shared their experience, discussed challenges, and proposed solutions.
Russian Atoms in 57 Countries
In late February, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev spoke in the State Duma (the lower house of the Russian Parliament) about the current state of affairs at Rosatom, the goals set for the future, and the projects under consideration.
