Construction sites. The Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority has issued a permit to pour first concrete for the foundation of Paks Unit 5. The work is scheduled to begin in February 2026. Another permit obtained allows for the start of construction on nuclear island buildings. Issued as supplements to the general construction license from 2022, the permits confirm that the Paks II project complies with strict international, European, and national nuclear safety requirements. The first concrete pouring is considered the beginning of the main construction phase for the power unit. The Paks II NPP is the first nuclear power plant being built to the advanced Russian VVER-1200 design in the European Union. Its two power units will jointly generate 2,400 MW of electricity. Work has begun at Russian production sites to manufacture core equipment for the power plant.
