Environment. Rosatom has launched a new furnace for vitrifying high-level radioactive waste, the hardest-to-manage and most hazardous type of radioactive material. Commenting on the event, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev emphasized that this project was part of an ambitious agenda to create a closed nuclear fuel cycle: “Our most important task is the maximum possible reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. We extract all useful substances from it, recycle them, and reliably store everything that cannot be reused. Vitrification is currently the most effective and environmentally sound method for handling high-level radioactive waste,” said Alexey Likhachev. He noted that the new furnace would expand high-level waste processing capacity. Andrey Poroshin, CEO of Rosatom’s subsidiary Mayak, stressed that launching the new facility had required a great deal of effort from the company. “The new EP-250/6 furnace was installed at an operating workshop by the Mayak team. This saved us time and resources while maintaining high safety standards. With this project finished, we have enhanced our efficiency in handling high-level waste, which is the hardest and most hazardous type of radioactive materials to manage.”
