Fuel. Rosatom has commissioned an analytical laboratory for mixed uranium-plutonium nitride (MUPN) fuel intended for the innovative fast neutron reactor BREST-OD-300. Located at the fuel fabrication/refabrication facility, the laboratory features approximately 90 units of high-tech equipment that will be used across all stages of the MUPN fuel production process. This type of fuel has never been used anywhere in the world on an industrial scale before. The fuel fabrication facility, the BREST-OD-300 reactor, and the spent fuel reprocessing facility are being constructed at the site of an experimental power plant (ODEK) in Seversk, Russia, as part of the Proryv (Breakthrough) project. ODEK is designed to demonstrate the feasibility of the closed nuclear fuel cycle (CNFC) involving fast neutron reactors and to turn the CNFC technology into a commercially viable alternative for the ‘conventional’ nuclear generation. When completed, ODEK will be the first ever nuclear power plant to integrate a fast neutron reactor and on-site facilities for closing the nuclear fuel cycle.
