Icebreakers. When on the Icebreaker of Knowledge 2023 youth expedition to the Arctic, the 50 Let Pobedy nuclear-powered ship encountered the French cruise icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot close to the North Pole. The travelers from the two countries greeted each other while the icebreakers were going side by side through the ice for some time. The 50 Let Pobedy icebreaker also passed by the world’s first ice-resistant self-propelled platform Severny Polyus and Akademik Tryoshnikov research vessel when traveling in high latitudes. Rosatom is building up its ice-breaking fleet. In mid-September, the Baltic Shipyard set about cutting special-grade steel for the fifth Project 22220 icebreaker, Kamchatka. Steel plates are cut in the hull department using plasma cutting machines. Rosatom continues to expand its operations on the Northern Sea Route. On August 20, Rosatom’s nuclear fleet operator Atomflot launched the second coastal voyage. The diesel-powered motor vessel Severny Proyekt will travel the route from Arkhangelsk to Magadan through Pevek, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Nakhodka, and then back to Arkhangelsk through Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Pevek.
