New fuel. The Machine-Building Plant (an enterprise of the Rosatom fuel division) for the first time manufactured and supplied modernized second-generation nuclear fuel for the PIK research reactor complex. The introduction of the fuel will make it possible to significantly increase the reactor run (time of operation per experiment without shutdown) at a power of 100 MW while ensuring the design safety indicators, improve the neutronic characteristics of the core, and increase the operational reliability of the facility. The PIK reactor is one of the world’s most powerful high-flux neutron sources and, in a number of parameters, the world’s best installation for studying matter at the nanoscale level. In terms of its capabilities, the PIK surpasses all existing neutron sources and those under construction.
