On December 2, Rosatom head Alexey Likhachev and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi met on the sidelines of COP28. Alexey Likhachev reaffirmed Rosatom’s commitment to the IAEA’s initiatives for the promotion of peaceful nuclear technology as a sustainable energy source, and readiness to continue joint work on this track. Russia joined a statement by the Agency and a group of countries on the role of nuclear energy in the climate agenda. The meeting also focused on the issues of ensuring nuclear safety and security of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant. In particular, the parties discussed the IAEA mission to the facility. An agreement was reached to hold full-scale consultations in January-February 2024.
