Research. Construction of the vault over the reactor hall was completed at the site of the world’s most powerful fast neutron research reactor MBIR. The workers installed 22 arches: each of them weighs 74 tonnes and has a span of 38 meters. It took five months to finish the job. With the new reactor in place, scientists will enjoy advanced research infrastructure for the next 50 years. Its unparalleled capabilities will expand the studies of two-component nuclear power engineering and closed fuel cycle technologies, and will accelerate and justify the development of safe Generation IV nuclear power plants. “MBIR will be used to conduct experiments in the interests of the nuclear power industry and other industries employing nuclear technology, from medicine to aerospace,” said Alexander Tuzov, Director of the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors.
