Technologies. Rosatom has completed the first phase of design work for a molten salt research reactor (MSRR). Key technology solutions were developed to be compiled into the relevant sections of the project documentation. The next major steps will be finalizing engineering designs for the reactor facility and the source fuel production unit, along with completing the full set of design documents and cost estimates. The MSRR is intended to advance technologies for the closed nuclear fuel cycle. “This project will bring the environmental safety of nuclear energy to a new level, making a major leap toward waste-free nuclear technologies. The core objective of this Generation IV nuclear technology we are preparing to test is to create a new system for processing and burning (eliminating) hazardous radioactive materials,” said Vasily Tinin, Director for Public Policy on Radioactive Waste, Spent Nuclear Fuel and Nuclear Decommissioning at Rosatom.
