Safety Energy

back to contents

Since 2013 in Russia was announced the Year of Environmental Protection, Rosatom is going to conduct several ecological activities, meant to preserve the environment in NPP regions for the future generations, as well as to increase ecological safety of the nuclear energy objects and to form ecological mind of the population. The “Nuclear Energy, Society, Safety 2013” Forum-Dialogue is one of the activities of this kind, taking place in Moscow in April 11-12.

Discussion Ground
The Forum-Dialogue is a meeting spot of the Rosatom representatives, authorities and public representatives of Russian and foreign social organizations. The Forum-Dialogue objective is to discuss topical issues of the safe development of nuclear power, options for solving key problems of safe use of nuclear technologies, which influence the development of national policy concerning environmental safety of nuclear industry, role of civil society in the decision-making related to the use of atomic energy.

At the plenary sessions and round tables of the event they will discuss the tendencies of nuclear power development in Russia and in the world, the problem of nuclear non-proliferation, radioactive waste and SNF safety handling. The participants will look for the way of how to provide nuclear, radioactive and ecological safety for the world. The other topic is combined use of different energy sources, including alternative ones, as well as the prospects of use of nuclear technologies in other industries (medicine, machine-building, instrument-making, microelectronics, new quality materials technologies etc).

How to take part
The Forum-Dialogue organizers are the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Public Council of ROSATOM, Green Cross, Non- Governmental Ecological Vernadsky Foundation, “Greenlight” International Ecological Public Organization and Russian Ecological Congress. The Forum-Dialogue participants are expected to be representatives of the federal and regional legislative and executive bodies, ecological and other non-governmental organizations, scientific and expert community, industrial enterprises, nuclear industry top executives, and international and foreign organizations operating in the field of the use of atomic energy.

Scientists, experts and atomic industry officials are also welcome to take part in the dialogue. Proposals on the Forum program and speakers’ requests can be sent to the Forum Organizing Committee before March 14 via e-mail nagorskaya.v@gmail.com or golovikhina@gmail.com. The letter should contain the name, contacts, the topic of speech and abstracts. Materials, presentations and final versions of texts have to be presented to the Committee before April 1, 2013.

Other Events
The specialists of Rosatom presented their most perspective projects at Asia Nuclear Business Platform, which took part in Hong Kong on 18-20 of February. Rosatom offered some approaches to international cooperation and presented some innovative projects in the field of small reactors and nuclear medicine. As a part of Small and Modular Reactor panel Russian specialists presented an integral 100 MW lead-bismuth fast breeder reactor (SVBR-100).

“Today in terms of the growing demand for energy, small reactors is one of the most promising areas. SVBR-100 project is designed by leading Russian scientific organizations and based on the technology applied for more than 80 reactor-years of trouble-free operation in nuclear propulsion systems”, noted Sergey Boyarkin, Director of Rosatom’s programs.

Techno-Presentation
Also on February 19 Rosatom presented its main projects in the field of radiation technologies. The work is carried out within three areas: nuclear medicine, ecology and radiation sterilization. Participants of Asia Nuclear Business Platform got acquainted with such projects as the Russian production of modern equipment for radionuclide diagnostics and radiation therapy, the construction of high-tech industrial enterprises – radiation centers and plants for radiation decontamination of medical waste.

The other information presented concerned the production and supply of isotope products and radiopharmaceuticals “Rosatom is one of the world’s key producers of isotopes. What we offer is a wide range of radioactive and stable isotopes” – said Mikhail Batkov, Head of Office for Radiation Technologies Program of Rosatom.

Broadening Cooperation
On February 20 at Asia Nuclear Business Platform Yuri Sokolov, the Vice President of Rusatom Overseas (Rosatom’s subsidiary, responsible for international business development) presented Rosatom’s approaches to international cooperation and the development of nuclear infrastructure.

“Today Rosatom offers foreign customers an integrated approach that includes a full range of solutions – not only the construction of an NPP with the most modern technology and safety systems, but also the involvement of local industrial companies in a project, solution on financing and the transfer of experience and knowledge, personnel training, as well as legal support and creation of the necessary nuclear infrastructure. The latter is the most valuable for countries that are just beginning to develop nuclear energy industry. Creation of the nuclear infrastructure in order to provide the management and regulation of the national nuclear program is a basis for further realization of nuclear projects, including those to construct nuclear power plants. Rosatom’s approach includes not only the company’s long-term experience and IAEA recommendations, but also focuses on the needs of a certain country. We are already successfully cooperating in this field with such countries as Vietnam, Bangladesh, Belarus, and we are ready to expand the geography of cooperation”, said Yuri Sokolov.
