Energy for the Neighbor

back to contents

The Baltic NPP, which is being built near Kaliningrad, is meant to provide energy to the Kaliningrad region and for export as well. Cooperation with Poland will allow Russia to enter international market faster. The negotiation has already been reported to start and some certainty in future cooperation has been expressed. Russia is ready to export the forth part of electricity produced by the plant.

The project has a lot of advantages for Poland, as power engineers believe: should the nets of the two countries connect, Russian side would be able to present the best offer. This would be in important politic decision for Poland as well. Polish side hasn’t yet confirmed the information concerning procurement of electricity from Kaliningrad. Janusz Piechociński, the Minister of Economy, refuses to give comments on the subject. However the mass media has long been saying that the necessity of energy in the neighbor republic will grow significantly in the coming decades.

The Baltic NPP is based on the AES-2006 project and will consist of two units. Start-up of the first one is planned for 2018, the second – in 2020. The annual turnover of energy production will be 17.4 billion kWh, the number of personnel will amount to 1100 people. The operating life of the station equipment will be no less than 60 years.
