back to contentsThe document was signed by Chief Executive Officer of ROSATOM Sergey Kiriyenko on behalf of the Government of the Russian Federation and Minister of National Development Zsuzsanna Nemeth Laszlone on behalf of the Government of Hungary.
According to the document, two large power VVER reactors will be built at the site of Paks NPP. Also, Russian companies will render related services to these power units. Besides, in the framework of the Russian-Hungarian Summit the heads of companies Rusatom Overseas, on the Russian side, and MVM and Paks-2, on the Hungarian side, signed the following documents: “Basic terms and conditions of construction of NPP power units”, “Basic terms and conditions of fuel supply to NPP power units” and “Basic terms and conditions of rendering services to NPP power units.” Under these documents, the parties, following the mutually approved schedule, in 2014 are to draft and sign contracts required for bringing the Paks NPP expansion project to the active implementation phase.
Nuclear generation takes a significant part of the country’s energy balance – 45%. Expanding Paks will help Hungary strengthen its export potential at the European energy market. Cooperation between Russia and Hungary in nuclear sphere started back in 1966, when the first agreement of the kind appeared between the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of Hungary. “This agreement helped us provide conditions for strengthening Russian-Hungarian cooperation, – the PM of Hungary said. – We’ve signed a great agreement and will gladly and proudly present it for the Parliament’s approval”. The Parliament of Hungary made a decision concerning construction of new units back in 2009. French Areva and American-Japanese Westinghouse also claimed to do the work.
