Rosatom to Help Expand NPP in Slovakia

back to contents

At the moment, the nuclear power plant in Mochovce operates two Russian-designed VVER-440 reactor units. The first unit was commissioned in 1998, followed by the second unit in 1999. The construction of Units 3 and 4 was started in 1987 and subsequently suspended in 1992. In 2009, Škoda JS signed a contract with Slovenske elektrarne, a Mochovce NPP owner, to finalize the construction. According to the contract, Škoda JS supplies primary loop equipment, fuel assembly management units, internal connection piping, certain components for instrumentation, control and automation systems, intermediate cooling systems, etc. In addition, the contract provides for pre-commissioning activities and tests to be carried out by the company. It is also in charge of coordinating subcontractors.

“This is our first major project with Škoda JS. We are sure we all will benefit from it as it will contribute to the development of both our companies and the industry in general,” noted Evgeny Salkov, CEO of Rusatom Service.

Rusatom Service is now joining the project. Škoda JS and Rusatom Service have signed a contract to assist in the primary loop installation and pre-commissioning activities at Mochovce Units 3 and 4. The price of this two-year contract has not been disclosed. The document was signed at a meeting held at Rusatom Service’s office to discuss cooperation prospects.

“Sixty years of cooperation, primarily on the projects in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, is what binds us together. We strive to continue and expand our cooperation,” says Josef Perlik, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Škoda JS.

Units 3 and 4 are scheduled for commissioning respectively in 2017 and 2018. As of spring 2016, Unit 3 is completed by 92%; Unit 4 is 74% ready. Mochovce NPP is a subsidiary of Slovenske elektrarne (SE), the second largest power supplier in Central and Eastern Europe.
