Rosatom to Supply Small Hydros to Georgia

back to contents

The buyer is Georgia’s International Energy Co., Ltd. engaged in the hydro power generation development. According to the contract, the company will purchase a pilot plant to be shipped in the first half of 2017, followed by more plants varying in capacity from 0.6 MW to 2 MW.

Simple and cost-efficient, small hydro power plants manufactured by Ganz can be used in areas that are not covered by the power grid for financial or technical reasons. They can serve either as independent power sources or an alternative to cost-inefficient and non-eco-friendly generators since they need no dam construction and have no impact on the environment of rivers and other water bodies. Thanks to their design, small hydro power plants by Ganz can be installed even at discharge channels of water treatment facilities.

Each plant consists of a turbine and a set of auxiliary equipment mounted inside a container. The containerized design drastically reduces lead-in times and costs of construction.

Small hydro power plants boast low generation costs, a short time of delivery, fast and easy installation. After the container is delivered to the site and water is channeled onto the turbine, power generation can start within a month. Although compact, hydro power plants have all the monitoring and control devices for their proper operation.

Another advantage is that containerized hydro plants can be controlled remotely via (mobile) phone or Internet. Therefore, the owner can monitor and control the plant with a PC, tablet or cellphone, and receive information about the power output.

Rusatom International Network is currently negotiating shipments of containerized small hydro plants by Ganz EEM to Armenia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, as well as Latin American, African and other countries.

“Along with the development of wind generation, this innovative product is Rosatom’s another step on the way towards global leadership in non-carbon energy and green power technologies that prevent environmental impact,” noted Andrei Nikipelov, CEO of AtomEnergoMash.

Vladimir Gorn, Deputy Head of Rosatom Eastern Europe

“Small hydro generation is important for Rosatom as a way to diversify its product portfolio. It is an example of how Rosatom enters new markets and acquires new customers. As a long-standing leader in nuclear power with wind generation projects in its portfolio, Rosatom has proved its technology leadership yet again. The first small hydro generation project is our logical step towards green energy.

It demonstrates the role of RIN regional centers in the promotion of products and services offered by Russian nuclear companies on a global scale. In fact, it was Rosatom Eastern Europe that made the deal possible. We studied local opportunities, had a series of meetings with the Georgian Ministry of Energy, Georgian Energy Development Fund, investors and the Hungarian Exim Bank. Last summer RIN signed a memorandum with International Energy Company, hold talks with Ganz EEM and facilitated the drafting of project documents.

But we are not going to rest on laurels. RIN is negotiating the possibility of small hydro plant shipments to Armenia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Latin America and African countries. More important is that the first project will be further used as a reference in the promotion of our new product.

RIN assisted AtomEnergoMash in developing the small hydro product strategy targeting foreign markets and new customers. It provides for a clear action plan which, if followed, will definitely bring us success.”
