Reward for Responsibility
back to contentsThe Uranium One company is currently conducting the perspective project known as “Mkuju River“. The license for uranium extraction at Tanzanian deposit is already obtained, the joint development agreement with the country’s government is to follow along with the permission of ecologists. The senior executives of the company have already started several social programs for supporting the Republic’s inhabitants.
Elephants under Rosatom protection
“As part of developing the Mkuju River Project, Uranium One is implementing a range of activities in the area of corporate social responsibility,“ noted Vadim Jivov, President of Uranium One Inc. -“Along with initiatives that have already earned well-deserved recognition, we are planning to increase our cooperation with Tanzanian authorities to help combat poaching in the territory of the Selous Game Reserve, which is located near our future production facilities. “
After the specialists worked their way out to the deposit, the path immediately started being used by poachers hunting for tusks. Elephants are quite inquisitive, they often walk over the new path to look at the atomists’ camp. The poachers make caravans of 30-40 people, with 2-3 shooters among them, the rest being “aborigines“ and walk for 150-200 km following the animals‘ tracks, killing all the elephants they meet on their way. They don’t snatch ivory at once though. When the food the hunters have with them is over, the caravan turns back and those, who carried supplies before, now collect the tusks, which further get sawed, packed and sent to one of tanzanian ports. There are thousands of people involved in this business.
Other foreigners, doing extraction of commercial minerals at the Tanzanian territory, only make an ecological payment into the country’s budget. While the Uranium One specialists are deeply involved in the work. There are resilient teams, created in cooperation with the government, carrying ligt equipment, also having helicopters and umanned aircrafts. There is a scout camp for up to 40 people, guading a significant part of the territory of the Selous Game Reserve.
High opinion
The government of Tanzania appreciated such a responsible approach. A few days ago the national Ministry of Energy and Minerals and the Extractive Industries Stakeholders Forum at a special ceremony rewarded the Uranium One’s Tanzanian social projects, acknowledged as best in such categories as Education, Health, and Employment. Uranium One also came in second place in the overall standings among companies operating in Tanzania with projects at the exploration stage.
Let us remind our readers that Atomredmetzoloto, Rosatom’s ore-mining holding (ARMZ), is planning to obtain 100% of the Canadian uranium producer Uranium One Inc. The deal is friendly, being unanimously supported by independent members of the Uranium One’s board of directors.
