Nuclear stations set a record

back to contents

All the ten operating nuclear stations generated a total of over 195 billion kWh of electric power. This was more than 5.5 billion kWh above the annual target set by the Federal Grid Company (189.15 billion kWh) and the power generation target (189.45 billion kWh) set by the industry, and 2 billion kWh above the upper target range of 193 million kWh.

The top performer in 2015 was Rostov NPP, which produced over 20.509 billion kWh of electric power to exceed the annual target by 13.5%. It means that the above-target generation in absolute terms reached almost 2.439 billion kWh. Power generation at Balakovo NPP reached 32,747.98 million kWh or 106.5% of the annual target (30,758 million kWh). Leningrad NPP produced 27,489.77 million kWh of electric power, or 103.3% of the target. An all-time record of 29.7 billion kWh was set by Kursk NPP, which exceeded the 2014 power output by 486 million kWh.

The BN-600 fast reactor at Beloyarsk NPP generated more than 4,525 million kWh last year or 107% of the target. BN-800, which was brought online at the same station only on 10 December 2015, produced 40 million kWh of electricity and is planned to generate 3,500 million kWh in 2016. However, the key objective for the new year is to put the BN-800 unit in commercial operation. This step will require going through the reactor startup program and the pilot operation phase.

The year 2014 was also record-setting in terms of power generation – the total electricity output reached 180.5 billion kWh. At present, nuclear stations operated by Rosenergoatom produce almost 20% of total power in Russia.
