“Radioactive sources were brought to Antarctica in the 1960s and 1970s to supply power to meteorological and geophysical equipment. Since they posed a threat to the environment, we removed the last four sources of ionizing radiation in 2015. There are no more of them at the Russian research stations in Antarctica,” he said. The ‘cleanup’ effort was made possible through the close cooperation with the U.S. Antarctic Mission.
