Energy storage. A portable battery produced by Rosatom will undergo testing in Antarctica. Natalia Nikipelova, President of Rosatom’s TVEL Fuel Company, handed over the storage unit to explorer Fyodor Konyukhov for his expedition to the South Pole. The device has several key advantages for the operation in extreme conditions: it can function at low temperatures, its casing is protected against dust and moisture, and its power reserve is sufficient to supply household appliances for several days. “What we will offer the market tomorrow is being tested today under a wide variety of conditions, including the most severe environments. We recently tested the Atom electric vehicle equipped with our battery at the North Pole and proved that our technologies can operate anywhere. Today we are continuing this tradition, and our lithium-ion storage unit is now heading on a new expedition, this time to the South Pole,” said Natalia Nikipelova. Rosatom is building two gigafactories for the production of lithium-ion cells and battery packs; the first factory is set to launch by the end of this year. These factories will supply batteries for about 100,000 electric vehicles annually.
