Nuclear Icebreakers. ZiO-Podolsk (part of Rosatom) manufactured two separators for the main turbine generator to be installed on board the new-generation Chukotka nuclear icebreaker. The new design is more compact and 15% lighter than the previous modification. The separators ensure that steam entering the low-pressure turbine contains the required percentage of moisture under specific icebreaker operating conditions (roll, pitching and keeling, intensive impacts and vibrations). The separator’s service life is 40 years. Rosatom operates the world’s only nuclear-powered icebreaker fleet, which escorts ship convoys on the Northern Sea Route. The fleet includes 7 nuclear icebreakers, with another two under construction.
