Plans. Speaking at the Technological Sovereignty and Low-Carbon Energy: Looking to Tomorrow session at the Russian Energy Week, Rosatom Chief Alexey Likhachev talked about the current trends in nuclear technology. “Boiling water reactors are the foundation of today’s nuclear industry. But it is now that we are testing a new fast neutron technology as part of our Proryv (Breakthrough) project in Tomsk. Fast reactors will be lead-cooled and, in terms of their safety parameters, can be regarded as Generation IV reactors with certainty. A fuel fabrication and refabrication facility is being built nearby. This means we will be the first to create a real Generation IV nuclear power plant with a closed fuel cycle. After that, instead of building individual reactors, we will start replicating two-component facilities that will include both fast and thermal neutron reactors joined together by a single fuel cycle,” Alexey Likhachev said.
