The peaceful atom turns 60: Results and plans

The Symposium of the World Nuclear Association (WNA) is an annual meeting of heads and specialists from the world’s leading nuclear industry companies. Traditionally, the symposium program includes an exhibition and several days before the event are spent for meetings of working groups, which deal with specialized topics essential for the nuclear industry development. This year, the theme of the Symposium was discussion of results of the 60-year development of the sector, as well as prospects and challenges for the next 60 years.

Speeches and discussions
Representatives of ROSATOM spoke at the Symposium events. Alexander Lokshin, the First Deputy CEO for Operations Management of ROSATOM, addressed the first plenary session. In the video presentation on 60th anniversary of the Russian nuclear industry he told the attendees about development of Russian nuclear technologies beginning from the first NPP through the current promising developments. He highlighted the contribution the nuclear industry makes in development of other technology sectors. Lyudmila Zalimskaya, the General Director of ROSATOM’s foreign trade company Techsnabexport, took part in the panel session “Major threats and opportunities facing fuel cycle companies”.

The Symposium ended with the panel session where nuclear industry leaders discussed key aspects of the nuclear power development in the next 60 years. Kirill Komarov, the Deputy CEO for Development and International Business of ROSATOM, was one of the panelists. He said, in particular, the sector future development would depend, among other, of ability of vendors to manage cost of kWh of nuclear electricity.

This year, specialists from ROSATOM’s companies took part in the work of task groups on small reactors, standardization and licensing, public acceptance, fuel market development issues, radwaste management etc.
At the international exhibition ROSATOM displayed a collective exposition, which exhibitors included the united engineering company NIAEP-ASE, Techsnabexport, Fuel Company of ROSATOM TVEL, International Uranium Enrichment Center, holding Uranium One (Canadian uranium mining company of ROSATOM). Also, the leading international companies such as Kepco, Hitachi, Areva, Rolls Royce, Westinghouse Electric, Cameco and other presented their displays.
The united display of ROSATOM was visited by more than 600 people, including WNA Director General Agneta Rising. The exhibition booth became the meeting place of the existing and potential partners of the publicly-owned corporation.
