During the visit Russia and Argentina signed a new intergovernmental agreement on the peaceful uses of atomic energy. It is aimed at the cooperation between the states in many areas, including construction of NPPs, joint research, production of radioactive isotopes for medicine and industry. The document was signed by ROSATOM CEO Sergey Kirienko and Minister of Federal Planning, Public Investments and Services Julio de Vido. This document was prepared to replace the former agreement, which expired in December 2012.

The main areas of the cooperation under the new agreement include design, construction, operation and decommissioning of NPPs and research nuclear reactors, including water desalination facilities, fundamental and applied research into peaceful atom, support of the nuclear fuel cycle for NPPs and research reactors.

Besides, the agreement provides for interaction of specialists from Russia and Argentina in the field of management of radioactive waste and regulation of the nuclear and radiation safety. In addition, nuclear specialists from both countries will cooperate in production of radioactive isotopes and their application in the industry, medicine and agriculture as well as education and training in the field of nuclear physics and nuclear power.

President of Russia Vladimir Putin believes the cooperation agreement between Russia and Argentina in the peaceful uses of atomic energy will be an important move in the sphere where there are great perspectives. He reminded that ROSATOM was bidding for construction of Unit 3 at Atucha NPP, noting that Russia had cutting-edge technologies of building NPPs and that they featured high economic efficiency and met most rigorous safety and ecology standards. To note, the Argentinean party has preliminary screened out companies eligible for Atucha reactor construction and ROSATOM is one of them.

Brazil in perspective
The Russian nuclear specialists concluded an important nuclear agreement with their Brazil colleagues as well. During the visit of President of Russia Vladimir Putin, Rusatom Overseas (promotes ROSATOM’s services in the international markets) and one of Brazil’s largest construction companies, signed a document of the cooperation in construction of an additional storage facility for spent nuclear fuel and a nuclear power plant in Brazil.

The document implies building up the bilateral collaboration in the field of nuclear power, in particular, construction of engineering utility systems on the site of the existing plant Angra and of the partnership in building new nuclear reactors in Brazil.

Until present NPPs of the Russian technology have not been America, but ROSATOM has termed this market a promising one for a long time (nuclear build in Latin America has been under way since the last century but the largest countries of the region declare their interest in these technologies).
