From Rio to Munich

back to contents

In February in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Energy Generation Congress Latin America was held, being one of the major annual events connected with nuclear power in the region. It always includes an exhibition and a conference. This year the congress was visited by 300 delegates from Argentina, Brazil, China, Russia, Uruguay, France, Chile and other countries. Rosatom was among the golden sponsors of the event.

Brazilian Congress
An exposition of the State Corporation with the participation of NIAEP and Atomstroyexport was demonstrated at the exhibition during the congress. The exhibition booth showed some information over the VVER reactor safety, SVBR-100 low-power reactor, being currently developed in Russia and also of some informational and educational projects of Rosatom. The exposition raised quite an interest on the part of Brazilian nuclear industry representatives. Thus it was visited by Mauricio Tolmasquim, President of Electrical Energy Research Company and also by representatives of the National Nuclear Energy Commission. The audience was more than other things curious about such topics as NPP financing, NPP construction experience at the foreign market, the Corporation suggestions in the personnel training sphere.

On the part of Rosatom a speech was held by Yury Sokolov, the Nuclear Infrastructure Department vice-President of Rusatom Overseas (The State Corporation Branch created for foreign promotion). In his presentation Sokolov focused attention on the prospective of Rosatom in nuclear energy development. He also spoke about the world condition after the Fukushima tragedy, economical crisis and nuclear safety. This month Rosatom also took part in the International Summit in Munich, Germany, dedicated to decommissioning of nuclear and radiation hazardous sites. The participants were presented an exposition, demonstrating the big potential of Russian companies in realization of international projects in the sphere of SNF and RW management along with radiation hazardous sites decommissioning.

In the course of the event many topical questions, connected with financing, developing and introducing of the new approaches to decommissioning and other related issues were discussed. There still exists some concern about the big scope of work, connected with decommissioning. The lack of experience, of necessary database, proper infrastructure and specialized organizations, able to organize the process, motivate some fruitful cooperation and offer new ideas for solving the problems. A presentation was also made by Ulf Kutcher, the NUKEM Technologies Executive Director (a German company purchased by Rosatom) in which he spoke about the State Corporation position in the question of decommissioning. About 50 representatives of different countries took part in the International Summit in Munich, such as: Austria, Belgium, Great Britain, Germany, Lichtenstein, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, France, Japan and others.
