back to contentsRosatom guarantees on-time deliveries of nuclear fuel to Ukraine, despite difficulties in the two countries’ relationship. Sergey Kiriyenko, Russian Corporation’s General Director, commenting upon the situation, emphasized, that, since nuclear industry projects are long-term, no contracts are connected with political situation. “Our today relationship with Ukraine is tough, but we supply nuclear fuel to all units. There were no fails and there won’t be any”, – said Mr. Kiriyenko during his meeting with Taner Yildiz, Minister for Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey in Ankara.
The sharpening of Russian-Ukrainian relationship won’t affect fuel delivery to European countries either. At the end of January Ukrainian authorities banned consist transportation with nuclear fuel cycle products on the country’s territory. Another traditional licensed way of delivery was chosen to be used for this purpose – air transportation. However, when everything was ready for fuel delivery to Slovakia, the Ukrainians decided to lift a ban.
Today the process of returning irradiated nuclear fuel produced in Russia from Ukrainian NPPs is going its normal way, according to Rosatom’s official representative. Before that the Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine, Yury Prodan, said that “Ukraine provided relevant security of the wagons sent to Russia in order to take nuclear fuel away”.
Ukraine, in a partnership with Rosatom, is realizing a project of finishing of units 3 and 4 of Khmelnitsky NPP, nuclear fuel plant construction, also cooperates in power engineering industry. 15 Ukrainian NPP units work on Russian nuclear fuel. Energomashspetsstal (EMSS, metallurgical enterprise of Rosatom) is located in Ukrainian town of Kramatorsk. EMSS specializes in cast and forged ironworks of individual and low-volume fabrication heavy engineering, energy and transport construction; metallurgical, cement and mineral industry. Kharkov’s Turboatom plant produces condensers for Russian NPPs. “We are planning to continue working, producing condensers for Russian nuclear stations, finish equipment supplying for unit 4 of the Rostov NPP”, – said Victor Subbotin, Turboatom General Director.
