Rosatom strengthens cooperation

back to contents

The memorandum was signed by Rosatom CEO Sergey Kirienko and Luis Alberto Sanchez, Bolivia’s Minister of Energy. The two countries agreed to discuss a possibility of concluding an intergovernmental agreement on nuclear cooperation. Russia and Bolivia plan to run joint projects involving application of radioisotopes and radiation technologies in the industry, medicine, agriculture and other fields, organize staff training, assist in the development of infrastructure for Bolivia’s national nuclear program, and hold talks on the construction of Russian-designed nuclear plants in Bolivia.

Besides, the partners plan to establish a nuclear science and technology center for the development of medicine, industry and agriculture. The research center will be equipped with a research reactor, a cyclotron, gamma irradiation plants and laboratories. In December, Rosatom will organize a seminar in Bolivia to present the entire spectrum of its nuclear technologies. Another aspect of cooperation will be development of public awareness programs and establishment of nuclear information centers. Russia and Bolivia will soon set up working teams to detail joint projects.

Nuclear center in Nigeria
Meanwhile, Russia and Nigeria approved a draft version of the intergovernmental agreement on the design, construction, operation and decommissioning of a multi-functional nuclear research center in Nigeria. The document was approved at a meeting between Nikolai Spasskiy, Rosatom Deputy CEO, with Franklin Erepamo Osaisai, Chairman of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission. “We were working on this document over the recent months,” says a representative for Rosatom. The final agreement is expected to be signed in Moscow before the year end.  In June 2012, the two countries signed a framework agreement providing for the design, construction, operation and decommissioning of the first nuclear power station in Nigeria.
