Chinese nuclear engineers trained at Balakovo NPP

back to contents

The training of Chinese engineers is part of the international business development strategy pursued by Rosatom and its subsidiary Rosenergoatom. The strategy is aimed at supporting other nations throughout the nuclear life cycle – from nuclear plant construction to professional staff training. In 2015, the Balakovo nuclear power plant will host a total of 33 trainees from China.

All fourteen trainees who have come to Balakovo this time have higher education. They majored in power engineering to find a job at the nuclear station, and this training is another milestone in their career. Back in China, they will have an important mission at Tianwan-2, now under construction by Rosatom. Like the first two reactor units, Units 3 and 4 will have VVER-1000 reactors equipped with state-of-the-art safety systems.

Earlier this year the Balakovo NPP commissioned a new, full-scale control room simulator of its Unit 1. It is Russia’s most advanced training simulator equipped with all operational and communication systems. As an exact model of the reactor control room, it ensures the most realistic presentation of potential emergencies, and allows the evaluation of staff actions and team work efficiency. The trainees can practice their skills both in standard operating modes and accident-related situations (design basis or beyond design basis accidents).

The Chinese engineers have an opportunity to manage the most difficult situations that can arise at a nuclear station. Every day they have a new drill followed by thorough in-class analysis and discussion. The trainees are genuinely interested in all the processes, ask questions and receive professional advice.
