Small hydro for Kazakhstan

back to contents

“Kazakhstan takes much interest in our small hydroelectric plants. By the end of this year we will have a meeting with the authorities of Almaty Region where they plan to build a small hydro cascade,” said Sergei Gromov, Head of Rosatom Central Asia. “We are now considering an opportunity to discuss similar projects with the authorities of East Kazakhstan Region. We also have joint small hydro projects with China.”

Containerized small hydropower generating systems are manufactured by the Hungarian company Ganz Engineering and Energy Machinery (Ganz EEM), which is a subsidiary of Atomenergomash, Rosatom’s nuclear engineering division. Small hydropower plants can be used in remote areas with no electricity grid. Just a month after the delivery, these plants are capable of generating up to 1 MW of electric power and are controlled remotely, via satellite.

Ganz EEM is negotiating shipments of small hydropower plants to Iran and discussing an opportunity of export supplies to Armenia, other Caucasian countries, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Ghana and Zambia.
