Power for Sale
back to contentsThe Baltic NPP project is frozen for the time being. Initial plans were to build two VVER-based units with a capacity of 1,170 MW each. The first and second units were scheduled for commissioning in 2016 and 2018 respectively. Electricity generated by the plant was meant to be exported. However, the construction was suspended in 2014, mostly for the need to find buyers for power to be produced. Rosatom has not abandoned the project and intends to revise its technical parameters.
The nuclear company has recently gained understanding with several partners in Europe. RosEnergoAtom (an operator of Russian NPPs) reports that Rosatom has signed memorandums with some European companies to sell power from the Baltic NPP. Rosatom has revised the concept of the nuclear plant and now considers supplying up to 100% of its capacity outside the Kaliningrad Region.
“We analyze technical capability of delivering electric power abroad from the Baltic NPP and consider various power logistics options that take account of the future configuration of synchronization zones and plans to establish a stand-alone power supply system in the Kaliningrad Region,” says the report.
