A delegation headed by the Chairman of the Uzbekistan Cabinet of Ministers’ Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety visited Russia. Students from Uzbekistan won Rosatom’s scholarship. The Uzbekistan branch of Russia’s National Nuclear Research University (MEPhI) opened admission for a new Informatics and Computer Science program.

Sharing experiences for the sake of safety

Abduvakkos Rafikov, Chairman of the Uzbekistan Cabinet of Ministers’ Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety, met with Alexander Trembitsky, Head of the Russian nuclear regulator Rostechnadzor. The parties shared their experience on the regulatory functions and powers in the field of industrial, radiation and nuclear safety, and discussed areas of cooperation. Following the meeting, it was decided to develop a Joint Action Plan for 2025-2026.

As part of the visit, the delegation took a tour of the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant (part of Rosatom). The guests were told about its operations, and visited turbine islands and control rooms of the power units. Special attention was paid to ensuring nuclear, radiation and environmental safety.

Rosatom scholarship winners

Rosatom announced the results of its international scholarship contest for foreign master’s students specializing in nuclear and related professions. More than 50 students took part in the selection process. Among the winners were five master’s students from Uzbekistan. They demonstrated high academic achievements and motivation to develop the nuclear industry in their home country. According to the contest organizers, Uzbekistan students showed both deep knowledge and clear understanding of their professional mission.

Rosatom’s scholarship program is aimed to support talented young professionals interested in developing the nuclear power industry, and to strengthen international scientific cooperation. The selection process was divided into several stages. Contestants had to present their academic achievements, solve a selection task, and make a video presentation. The winners were those who demonstrated substantial knowledge, determination and ability to independently solve complex engineering and scientific problems.

One of the winners, Hasan Alovitdinov, who studies at the Obninsk Institute for Nuclear Power Engineering, plans to commit himself to a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan. “I did not expect my work to be appreciated so highly, but I put 100% effort into it. It was a valuable experience that shows that my knowledge and efforts bring results. Special thanks to the professors who taught us because their contribution to our training is invaluable,” the student shared his point of view.

New programs at MEPhI Tashkent

The Uzbekistan branch of the National Nuclear Research University (MEPhI) in Tashkent opened admission to a new Informatics and Computer Science program.

In this program, mathematics is made a sizable part of the curriculum for would-be IT professionals. Much emphasis will be laid on interdisciplinary research. Students will have an opportunity to participate in many R&D projects covering unmanned systems, digital twins of production processes, and deployment of AI management solutions for complex engineering facilities. The branch already has a VR lab that enables students to simulate the nuclear reactor operation in a digital environment, or operate a digital prototype of the reactor control panel.

Along with the new IT program, MEPhI Tashkent introduced an educational program on Medical Physics and Nuclear Medicine. This program is focused on training medical physicists who will specialize in diagnostics and treatment of oncologies. Graduates will gain competencies in radiation medicine, nuclear diagnostics, and application of advanced radiation therapy solutions.

It is planned that 50 students will be enrolled for each of the new programs in 2025 on a tuition basis. The enrollment campaign will be accompanied by a series of public lectures, presentations, and meetings with industry representatives.
