The international exhibition ICCI has been held since 1994. The event is regularly attended by more than 16,000 exhibitors. The ICCI features a broad business program, which envelopes discussions on issues of power engineering and environmental protection. The conference held in frames of the event addressed global energy issues, power generation and geopolitical developments in the context of the global economic crisis, as well as prospects of the world power generation, energy saving issues, and energy dialogue between EU and Turkey.

Flexible approach
ROSATOM’s engineering company Atomenergoproekt is a frequent participant of the ICCI. The company is the architect general of Akkuyu NPP, which is built in the Turkish province Mersin (four VVER-1200 reactors of 4,800 MW total power capacity). The reactors are planned to start up in 2020-2023. The plant is built to AES-2006 design of Generation III+ that uses cutting-edge nuclear plant safety solutions. The design was developed by Atomenergoproekt specialists.

At the company’s booth within ROSATOM’s united display the guests had a look at items describing key activity areas of Atomenergoproekt, its completed projects and future development plans. The interactive display showed the latest designs of the company, i.e. AES-2006 and VVER-TOI. The engineering company specialists explained on safety systems and answered questions of the exhibition visitors.

The ROSATOM’s display also included the United Engineering Company NIAEP-ASE (principal construction contractor of Akkuyu NPP), which informed on construction of NPPs abroad, its practical experience in promoting Russian advanced nuclear technologies, and ongoing and future projects. Representatives of NIAEP-ASE held a presentation on the company’s activities for Turkish and foreign visitors of the exhibition and conference attendees. Damei Khashba, the head of the analytical arm of the Strategy Department, spoke on “Implementation of complex infrastructural projects: NPP construction, management of RAW and SNF, decommissioning of NPP.” Today NIAEP-ASE is a global engineering company, according to the speaker. “We are diversified by business segments. We approach complex tasks faced by our clients in a flexible manner. Our competences and experience are highly valued in the international market and the thick orders portfolio and multiple references are striking evidence of this,” D. Khashba noted.

Stepan Prikhodko, the head of Electricity Generation Department, spoke on the use of the advanced technology of project management, i.e. Multi-D system, which had been developed by the united company’s specialists. This technology can be applied at implementation of any complex engineering projects ranging from CCGT units through petrochemical facilities. The use of this technology makes the facility servicing and decommissioning in future much easier, according to Prikhodko.

Sergey Streltsov, the quality management director, elaborated on quality requirements set forth for the equipment supplied for NPP construction. He emphasized in particular that the united company NIAEP-ASE always guaranteed a high level of quality, reliability and safety of its products and services, meeting at maximum all requirements and expectations of the customer and requirements for nuclear facilities set forth by Russian and international safety standards and regulations.

NPP as the necessity
Specialists of a ROSATOM’s project company AKKUYU NPP JSC took part in the Turkey-MENA Nuclear Industry Congress 2014, which was held in Istanbul. The goal of the forum was to exchange experience aiming at joint nuclear power development in Middle East and North Africa countries.

The first-day theme was “National Nuclear Development Strategy.” In frames of the theme discussion Necati Yamac, the head of Nuclear Power Implementation Department within the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Turkey (MENR), noted, Turkey’s dependence on external energy sources is 72% and annually the country spends tens of billions US dollars to buy energy resources. Given the growing electricity demand, the NPP is the necessity for our state, he added. In case the nuclear power plants in Akkuyu and Sinop are started up, Turkish need in natural gas would drop to allow saving US$ 7.2 billion a year, which can be spent for social projects.

Dmirtij Pokidyshev, lead technical and licensing coordinator at AKKUYU NPP JSC, spoke on the progress of the Turkey’s first NPP construction project. He noted: “The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey directly interacts with Russian specialists. In frames of the nuclear plant construction project, AKKUYU NPP JSC carries out its activities in cooperation with the Turkish state bodies. The first NPP in Mersin Province will be commissioned as planned.” He also noted that at this time, the nuclear industry legal framework has not been completed yet. The governmental authorities of the country jointly with the Project Company staff actively cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the issue.
