Broaden the Strategy

back to contents

Rosatom strategy is based on the objective to become a global leader in technology. The document was approved last November. However in 2012 it had to be updated. According to Karavaev, there were certain reasons for that.

For example, currently price growth for electricity and power is limited, which makes tariff conditions unfavorable for Rosatom. That is the reason of some difficulties with development programs financing. It is necessary to reconsider some tactical plans, reconfirm priorities. Looking for new markets may be the way out.

Besides Rosatom needs to broaden its strategic initiative portfolio. The plan is to cover development areas where growth rates are higher than those in the industry traditional markets. Karavaev believes those areas are new power engineering (accumulating mechanisms, energy supplies, smart nets), new materials (superconducting and composite materials), lower and medium power reactors. Rosatom’s wide experience in NPP construction can also be used while building other complex engineering objects that do not belong to nuclear power.

Other strategic initiatives may include rare earth group metals production (we wrote about this in the first release of the digest, an article about R&D centre on the basis of VNIIKHT, a Rosatom enterprise).

Karavaev notes that adjacent nuclear industry markets are often much bigger than traditional ones. Thus, nuclear fuel market capacity is less than $20 billion, while radiation technologies volume is several times more, up to $70 billion. “Besides the adjacent market growth potential exceeds a great deal the prospective of the traditional ones. The nuclear fuel market is to increase by 30 % by the year 2030, meanwhile the radiation technologies will increase more than 4 times. Thus it is quite natural that our strategy is paying some special attention to this field” – says Karavaev.

The Rosarom strategy has recently been acknowledged by the rating agency “Expert” as the best in the country. The research was conducted within “Expert-400”, one of the most respected Russian corporate ratings. The strategy was evaluated on the following criteria: goal-setting adequateness, the conformity of tooling to the assigned mission, plan ambitiousness etc. “We are proud to know that Rosatom strategy was admitted to be the most promising, while the system of strategic planning – the best. That’s what brought us to the top of the rating” – emphasizes Karavaev.
